GENERAL TAPIOCA WINS HALF TON CLASSICS CUP     The 4th Ecover Half Ton Classics Cup 2009 was won by the Belgian halftonner General Tapioca and crew. After 9 races the British East coast entry Hullabaloo XV was second, with Per Elisa from the Falmouth based Royal Cornwall Yacht Club in third position. Heavy winds and swell prevented the 23 yachts of racing on the last 2 days of the event. Philippe Pilate, owner of General Tapioca and sailing for the Brussels Royal Yacht Club, was a very happy man after having won the event for a second time. The aim was not to win, but to make no errors on the water, he said, but as regularity often pays off, he and his crew were delighted wit the overall prize offered by event sponsor Ecover. Upon receiving the second prize from sponsor Belgacom, an ecstatic David Evans, owner of Hullabaloo XV, a Stephen Jones designed Hustler 32, thanked the race organizers for their magnificent work. As they managed to combine perfect races with brilliant shore activities, he said, they made it very difficult for the organizers of the next event to do better. An older design, Hullabaloo XV found near perfect conditions in Nieuwpoort, and if the long inshore would not have been cancelled due to the strong swell in the entrance channel, he could have taken the title… The German boat Strolch, a good old Albin Ballad from Cuxhaven won the overall series prize, with Crakajax, an X-95 from the Isle of Wight, in second place. “Normally we only sail one design events with our boats, and this is just something different we wanted to try”, admitted the skipper Michael Langhans: “but we were astonished with the quality of the event which is really extraordinary”. However the apotheosis of the prize giving was not the overall victory of General Tapioca: the organizing committee had decided to award the ‘Half Ton True Spirit Trophy’ to the boat and crew who most lived up to this ’half ton spirit’. As one of the race organizers was competing in the event, it was decided that the all female event shore team would decide upon the winning team. All week long teams tried to influence their voting, but finally the trophy was awarded to the Irish entry King One, sailed by David Cullen and his crew. After performing their version of ‘Molly Malone”, the prize giving, and thus the event, came to an end. The halftonners will meet again in 2011, in England.   Friday 28 th & Saturday 29 th August No races these two days  .... Too windy !   Thursday 26 th August On Thursday the halftonners have been sailing the Radio Holland races, incorporated in the Ecover Half Ton Classics Cup. As during the previous day the wind picked up during the day, timidly at the beginning, but at the start of the third race the anemometers were indicating +20 knots southwesterly winds. The morning clouds persisted until mid day, but as from 12.00 the sun arranged yet again for perfect sailing conditions. One even had the feeling as if Nieuwpoort was at the Mediterranean… Race favourite General Tapioca claimed the first win of the day, but had only 4 seconds margin over second placed Hullabaloo XV… Nevertheless with Per Elisa only managing a 5th place General Tapioca strengthened their overall lead. The German team on Zick Zack finished third. In the second race the biggest surprise came from the German series entry Strolch, a well sailed Albin Ballad: they claimed the second place of the race, one minute after the incredible Hullabaloo XV, but 24 second ahead of General Tapioca. Unfortunately Ballerine, sailing with expert help of Andre Nelis at the helm, blew up their 17-year old mainsail, and abandoned after finishing the second race. Thanks to the help of the Irish of King One, who had a spare main available, Ballerine will be able to sail on Friday. Now that’s Half Ton spirit! With the wind increasing at the start of race 3 the team on Waverider were determined to add another first to their scoring. Right from the start of the short coastal race they were with the frontrunners General Tapioca and Per Elisa, both with a significantly higher rating. Maintaining their position during the race and fighting hard, they finished in third position, only seconds before the Irish on King One. In corrected time however Waverider managed to beat General Tapioca by a margin of 9 seconds. Hullabaloo XV again lived up in the fresh winds and realized a third place at 33 seconds from the race winner. Day 3 overall results: 1. General Tapioca (BEL ) – 6 pts 2. Hullabaloo XV (GBR) – 6 pts 3. Skippy’s Ton (BEL) – 16 pts 4. Waverider (BEL) – 18 pts 5. Per Elisa (GBR) – 20 pts Wednesday 26 th August And yet another three races sailed for the 4th Ecover Half Ton Classics Cup in Nieuwpoort. The excellent weather conditions offered a brilliant view for all spectator craft and also allowed the many photographers and the camera team marvelous shots and images, thanks to Belgacom TV, the race day sponsor, who rented a helicopter for this occasion. Wednesday’s races were sailed in moderate winds force 3-4 freshening during the day. As the day before the strong spring tide currents allowed the better navigators to play their cards. In the last race for example, on her way to the first mark, the old Ufo 31 Pastiche crossed in front of the fleet of high tech halftonners. Her skipper was still showing a wide smile, hours after the prizegiving. Thanks to the good wind and his know-how the British entry Hullabaloo XV won the first race in compensated time, before the local halftonner General Tapioca and the Irish entry King One. At the beginning of the second race the freshening wind imposed sail changes, as the medium sails were stowed away and high aspect sails made their appearance. In these conditions the local boat General Tapioca excelled and finished the race with an advantage of 42 seconds over the fast Per Elisa. On corrected time however it was again Hullabaloo XV who took second place, Per Elisa saving her third place. For the third race the race director opted for a short inshore, to change habits, as the wind was decreasing. Sailing into some wind holes Hullabaloo XV after an excellent start saw the fleet coming back and thundering over her. Finally it was the crew on Per Elisa who showed that they were getting quite familiar with the race area, beating General Tapioca and King One. The Irish are showing excellent regularity and seem well on their way to a top three result in the final ranking. At the prizegiving, after having sung a ‘Happy birthday’ for 2 sailors, all competitors were given amazing prizes by Belgacom TV. After dinner the ladies and gentlemen of Daddy’s Girl set the tone for yet again a big party until very, very late. Day 2 overall results: 1. General Tapioca (BEL ) – 5 pts 2. Hullabaloo XV (GBR) – 11 pts 3. King One (IRL) – 12 pts 4. Per Elisa (GBR) – 13 pts 5. Skippy’s Ton (BEL) – 18 pts   Tuesday 25 th August The first day ... Tuesday saw the first races for the 4th Ecover Half Ton Classics Cup in Nieuwpoort (BEL). When they left the pontoons the yachts were greeted by a light drizzle which quickly dried up to make place for yet another sunny day. The wind gradually increased throughout the day, and a fresh westerly allowed the boats to enjoy a marvelous and speedy spinnaker run back home in the last race of the day. The day started with a three lap upwind-downwind, followed by a 2 lap one to allow the slower boats toi remain more with the pack. By 15.00 the British entry Per Elisa had marked two straight wins beating local boat General Tapioca and the Irish entry King One in the first race and British East Coast entry Hullabaloo XV and the Belgians on board Waverider in the second race. Just before starting the third race the wind came really through and a 15 knot westerly greeted the boats on the first beat towards the first mark of the short inshore. The tide had just turned as well, making this beat a very tactical one. No wonder local boats General Tapioca and Waverider had a card to play here and both of them lead the fleet around the first mark, followed by a quick King One and Per Elisa. After a long run under spinnaker and a short upwind course back to the shore the halftonners arrived under spinnaker again at the finish line near the harbour entrance. Excelling in these windier conditions Waverider beat General Tapioca and King One in corrected time.   Monday 24 th August What a day... This morning the last skippers performed the entry obligations: all boats are now proudly displaying their race numbers as well as the official regatta flag. Walking on the pontoons learns that many yachts are ready for action, but also that on some boats the to do list is still painfully long. Nevertheless all boats started the practise race at 14.00: the race comittee had drawn a short starting line for a 1 mile beat to windward and back, to be repeated 3 times. From the beginning we could see Zick Zack, the German entry, excelling in the light wind conditions, whilst General Tapioca had to battle her way to the top: only at the last wedather mark they managed pass in front of King One's bow. In the evening all teams were conveyed to the official opening ceremony, where the commodores of the hosting yacht club and the co-organizing club welcomed all participants and wished them the best of luck for the days to come. At the end of the official part sparkling champagne from Veuve Devaux set the tone for the first whirling evening: excellent food, good music and loud singing until very, very late in the evening. The 4th Ecover Half Ton Classics Cup has started...   Sunday 23 th August All very quiet in Nieuwpoort this morning at 7.00 AM. The day is starting sunny and the weatherforecast is promising another mediterranean day here. Excellent day for sea trials... Walking on the pontoons we noticed one nightly arrival: the famous French red-painted Douce Folie 2... The owner of Envol also arrived from work late at night, but nevertheless was spotted cleaning his boat at 7.30...Busy day for the orgaisation team as well, since it was decided to open the registrations at 11.00 this morning, including the distribution of the welcome packs.    Saturday 22 th August Saturday afternoon we welcomed Harlequin, Crackerjax, Alchemist and Hullabaloo after a mainless windless voyage from their homewaters to the blue waters of the Nieuwpoort Yacht Harbour. The French Taranta arrived as well by sea, after a long voyage from Brittany and Philemon, from Saint-malo, is ncurrently sitting on her raod trailer, ready for action tomorrow. Per Elise and King One arrived by road earlier and are now on the halftonner-pontoon together with all the rest. The crew from Finnish entry Blues are coping with a kind of unwanted flu: let's hope they get better by Monday. Ballerine has been put in the water again after 17 years, and she's on her way to become a new racing beauty... The organisation has been busy with constructing the marquee and composing the welcome packs. Compertitors will notice that the last has been a tremendous job...   Thursday 20th August   Life is tough in Nieuwpoort ... These last days local crews of the Nieuwpoort based Half Tonners had to learn dealing with something new for them, actually the Mediterranean way of sailing. With sea breeze starting at 2pm, sailing usually takes place in the afternoon with the boats heading back downwind to the KYCN at the end of the day, the sun still shining between their backstays. Life is tough in Nieuwpoort while waiting for the 25 Half Tonners that registered for the next Ecover Half Ton Classics Cup. While Envol and Red Cloud are trying their new mainsails, Yves -the Belgian King of Diesel- managed to blow new life into Ballerine's engine after 17 years of silence. In the meantime Waverider's crew is training hard, well aware they are crewing the boat that won the Half Ton Cup in 1978 and 1979.  Half Ton Classics Cup - August 2009

GENERAL TAPIOCA WINS HALF TON CLASSICS CUP

The 4th Ecover Half Ton Classics Cup 2009 was won by the Belgian halftonner General Tapioca and crew.

An older design, Hullabaloo XV found near perfect conditions in Nieuwpoort, and if the long inshore would not have been cancelled due to the strong swell in the entrance channel, he could have taken the title…

The German boat Strolch, a good old Albin Ballad from Cuxhaven won the overall series prize, with Crakajax, an X-95 from the Isle of Wight, in second place.

No races these two days  .... Too windy !

Thursday
26 th August

On Thursday the halftonners have been sailing the Radio Holland races, incorporated in the Ecover Half Ton Classics Cup.

As during the previous day the wind picked up during the day, timidly at the beginning, but at the start of the third race the anemometers were indicating +20 knots southwesterly winds. The morning clouds persisted until mid day, but as from 12.00 the sun arranged yet again for perfect sailing conditions. One even had the feeling as if Nieuwpoort was at the Mediterranean…
Race favourite General Tapioca claimed the first win of the day, but had only 4 seconds margin over second placed Hullabaloo XV… Nevertheless with Per Elisa only managing a 5th place General Tapioca strengthened their overall lead.
Day 3 overall results:
1. General Tapioca (BEL ) – 6 pts
2. Hullabaloo XV (GBR) – 6 pts
3. Skippy’s Ton (BEL) – 16 pts
4. Waverider (BEL) – 18 pts
5. Per Elisa (GBR) – 20 pts

Wednesday
26 th August

And yet another three races sailed for the 4th Ecover Half Ton Classics Cup in Nieuwpoort.

Day 2 overall results:
1. General Tapioca (BEL ) – 5 pts
2. Hullabaloo XV (GBR) – 11 pts
3. King One (IRL) – 12 pts
4. Per Elisa (GBR) – 13 pts
5. Skippy’s Ton (BEL) – 18 pts

Tuesday

The first day ...

What a day...

Sunday
23 th August

All very quiet in Nieuwpoort this morning at 7.00 AM.

Saturday
22 th August

Saturday afternoon we welcomed Harlequin, Crackerjax, Alchemist and Hullabaloo after a mainless windless voyage from their homewaters to the blue waters of the Nieuwpoort Yacht Harbour.
