The first days were all about a warm welcome. On Saturday and Sunday, teams registered, got weighed, checked in, and geared up for action. Our volunteers ensured smooth organization and, combined with Belgian hospitality, immediately set the tone for the week. On Saturday evening, the official opening ceremony took place at VYN, featuring Belgian mussels – a festive and flavorful start!
Sunday brought the practice race under sunny skies, while the regatta village came to life on shore. In the evening, Sainte Catherine waffles added a friendly atmosphere and a delicious local touch.

Monday – The Sea Has Its Own Plans
The first race day brought a strong northerly breeze and choppy seas. Despite the races being cancelled around 3:30 PM, the regatta village stayed lively. A good cup of coffee kept spirits up throughout the day, followed by our first informal prize-giving: the "Best (International) Bar Mates on a Monday Afternoon." The sailors' good vibes were undeniable.
In the evening, a delicious pasta food truck wrapped up the day under the sun.
On Tuesday, the sailors finally hit the water. Three intense races in challenging conditions quickly revealed that the top Spanish and French teams were here with one goal: to claim the title.
Onshore, excitement was just as high. Thanks to a live tracking system installed on every boat, races were broadcast in real time on four big screens across Nieuwpoort – including at Poolreiziger and Loodswezen – allowing families, fans, and curious onlookers to enjoy the spectacle.
After each race, sailors were treated to a surprise: homemade ice cream by Piet – a real delight! During the daily prize-giving, the “heaviest boats” category was awarded in a playful moment that added even more to the vibrant atmosphere.
Wednesday – Sunny Sailing & Young Talent
Starting Wednesday, the weather settled in: sunshine, a steady breeze, and perfect conditions. Sailors enjoyed three solid races and soaked up the relaxed evening vibe in the village under the theme: "Burgers & Fries… and a Surprise!"
And the surprise? A DJ and a spontaneous party that brought everyone together and boosted the team spirit.
During the fun prize-giving, young talent took the spotlight. Alba, a 12-year-old from Spain, stole the show – she was part of the winning team! A powerful moment for the future of our sport.
Thursday – Endurance & Recognition
Thursday was without a doubt the longest day on the water. Boats left the harbor at 11:15 AM and didn’t return until 8:30 PM – eight intense hours at sea, four races, and teams kept pushing, laughing, and persevering right up to the final start after 6:20 PM.
Conditions required plenty of patience: in the morning, a variable northwesterly wind of 6 to 8 knots – just enough to race, but with the current, it made for a serious technical challenge. In the afternoon, the breeze shifted to the northeast, becoming more stable and offering a welcome sporting boost.
That evening’s fun prize-giving was especially meaningful: the largest all-female crews were celebrated. Sailing is one of the rare sports where men and women compete together in mixed teams on equal terms. What used to be rare is now becoming the norm – and this championship shows just how powerful the sport can be when it’s inclusive.
Friday – The Final Showdown
Finals day was electric. The top 5 teams were neck and neck, and time was running out. Still, the Race Committee managed to squeeze in three thrilling races. With the legendary words, “Clear Start, thank you all!”, Race Director Peter Van den Bossche brought the competition to a close.
In the evening, a festive closing ceremony took place. The Spanish team Eurofrits Aviko & Newind Foods claimed the World Champion title once again – their third consecutive victory. After the awards, a sunny team dinner and an unforgettable party followed!
KYCN in Action
Our club didn’t just host the event – we were also strongly represented on the water. Congratulations to all our teams for their commitment, team spirit, and enthusiasm! It was a true pleasure to see both seasoned and first-time KYCN sailors out there – a great promise for the future.
Thank You All
Without our passionate volunteers – on land, at sea, in the kitchen, behind the bar, and behind the scenes – this event would never have come to life. Your dedication, energy, and enthusiasm truly made the difference. You are what makes KYCN such a fantastic club!
A big thank-you as well to the Race Committee from RYCB and to the jury team for their expert and meticulous work on the water.
And of course, a warm thank-you to our sponsors: CFP Green Buildings (main sponsor), Tradeco, Willy Naessens, Huysman Yacht, Delen Private Bank, the City of Nieuwpoort, and all our supporting sponsors. Your support made this championship possible.
Finally, an enormous thank-you to all KYCN members for your enthusiasm, flexibility, and understanding during this intense week. For a few days, our club was the beating heart of the international sailing world – and you welcomed it with open arms.
Together, we made something truly special happen. Thank you!
